Buccal Fat Pad ReductionFacial fat is the natural volumizer to the face. Typically with aging, the fat pads start to atrophy, or disappear. This is seen in the temples, cheek area, and around the eyes. Some patients, however, have slightly larger fat pads in the lower cheeks. This can give the appearance of a fuller or rounder lower face. Even with weight loss, these larger fat pads may be persistent - this is usually a genetic factor. Reducing parts of the buccal fat pad can help slim the cheeks or face, achieving a more sculpted look. This is accomplished by making incisions inside the mouth. This allows your surgeon easy access to the extensions of the fat pads that are being reduced. Complete removal of the fat pads is not advised, as this can create an over-sculpted or gaunt appearance. Once the appropriate amount of fat has been removed, the incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches. After surgery, patients may experience some tightness in the cheeks. This will resolve over the course of the next two weeks. Some swelling is normal - this may make the cheeks seem more full. Over the next 2-4 weeks, the swelling will reduce and the results of the buccal fat pad reduction and ultimate facial slimming will gradually appear. Reduction of the buccal fat pads is not for everyone. Cosmetic trends change with time, with the current trend leaning towards a more sculpted facial appearance. Removal of the buccal fat in the wrong candidate can cause a patient to look older or gaunt. Additionally, the buccal fat that is removed never regrows. With aging, the facial fat begins to go away. Performing this procedure in young patients may have negative consequences as they get older and go through the normal aging processes. For these reasons, your surgeon may advise against this treatment. This is certainly an area of treatment where “less is more” and a conservative surgical approach is advised.
